Our Philosophy

Design With Ecology in Mind

At Backyard Ecoscape, every landscape begins with listening — to the land, the soil, the light and the existing plant community. Rather than forcing a design onto a space, we work with the natural conditions already present to create gardens that are resilient, functional and deeply connected to local ecology.

Native plants form the foundation of our work because they support pollinators, birds and beneficial insects while requiring fewer inputs over time. When plants are matched correctly to place, landscapes thrive — not just on installation day, but for years to come.

Our goal is simple: to create landscapes that feel intentional, alive and at home in their surroundings. When appropriate, we also work with select non-invasive plants at a client’s request — always offering native alternatives and prioritizing ecological function and sustainability.

Removal of an overgrown non-native shrub to reset the site for long-term health.

Installation of a mixed border using client-requested plants and ecological alternatives.

Finished border planting designed for maturity, resilience and low maintenance.

The Process

How We Work Together

Every project starts with a conversation. Whether you’re planning a full garden transformation or looking for guidance on a specific area, the process is collaborative, transparent and tailored to your goals.

1. Consultation & Site Assessment
We begin with an on-site or virtual consultation to understand your space, priorities and vision. This includes evaluating soil, light, drainage, existing plants and long-term goals.

2. Design & Planning
Using what we learn, we create a thoughtful, site-specific plan rooted in native plants and ecological function. Designs are practical, realistic and scaled to your property — not one-size-fits-all templates.

3. Installation & Planting
When installation is part of the project, plants are installed with care and attention to proper spacing, depth and long-term health. Every decision is made with longevity in mind.

4. Guidance for the Long Term
We provide clear guidance for care, maintenance and next steps so your landscape can continue to thrive well beyond installation.
